Critical Role Season Four Unveils the Soldiers Group

Ever since the premiere of the fourth campaign, fresh DM the talented storyteller has kept fans guessing with deep backstory, a colorful mix of personalities, and a exciting storyline featuring celestial beings, fiends, and malevolent powers expanding in strength within the city.

Note: Spoilers for Episode 3 of this adventure are included.

The Combat-Oriented Party Revealed

The latest chapter finished on a dramatic pause and introduced the initial group of heroes who will branch out from the primary party to embark on their own adventure, separate from the other two tables.

The combat-focused team features Teor (brought to life by the voice actor), the nimble rogue (the talented performer), the strong-willed figure (the cast member), Wicander (the player), and Kattigan Vale (the actor).

Why Split the Party?

Considering an extensive roster, it was evident from the beginning that keeping everyone at one table would be impossible.

This explains, the opening chapters of this story serve as an Overture, intertwining the personal journeys before branching into three distinct groups: Warriors, Schemers, and Questers.

What Defines the Combat Party

As described by the Dungeon Master, the Soldiers table is for players who are drawn to a traditionally charged fight-heavy story mode where diplomatic options are rare.

Upon first impression, figures such as the hesitant healer Wicander Halovar might appear unsuited, but the actions of the latest installment make it clear why these five characters are ideally matched for the combat party.

Motivations for Departure

First, the team knows exactly where to head next after a brutal first encounter with the antagonists.

A former ally of Thjazi—whose demise started the narrative’s action—manipulated the foes for his own means, entering Thjazi’s hideout, attacking the rogue, and swiping all the magical artifacts to sell off.

The traitor then cleared his obligations and ran away to a fortified location in the northern region, north of the city, with Teor’s brother close behind.

Personal Motivations

Secondly, each character has a individual motive to leave the city the urban setting:

  • Thimble, as Thjazi’s partner and best friend, desires revenge.
  • The knowledgeable figure is familiar with Timmony and advises that it is a hostile location.
  • The strong character and The cleric, having resisted his relatives’ demands to kill the fighter and instead rescued him, have no other options.
  • But, their status as important members in House Halovar could enable the party access areas they usually can’t.
  • Moreover, The fighter swore a eternal obligation to The cleric for his rescue and will now go with him wherever.

Wanted and Hunted

Finally, all of them are sought by the authorities that govern the setting for a variety of reasons, making staying in the city too risky:

  • Thimble and Kattigan are notorious outlaws.
  • The strong figure and Wicander betrayed House Halovar and the horde of evil beings they are allied with.
  • The fighter is targeted for elimination by House Halovar.

This means them few options but to head to Timmony in quest for the traitor.

What’s Next?

From episode three’s post-show segment, we learn that the Soldiers table will be absent next week, leaving the rest of the cast members to assemble the Questers and Schemers parties.

Audiences can look forward to discovering which adventurers will be assigned to which table in the season’s last Overture episode, streaming live on next week.
