New research indicates that people who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who stop conventional diet and exercise plans.
Findings released in a leading health publication points out that while obese individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Individuals buying these medications need to be aware of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery means a return to original weight in about a year and a half.
Weighing Approaches
The research, which reviewed dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
The team emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically see a less rapid creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Explaining the Quick Rebound
Experts suggest the mechanism of the injections explains the amplified weight return.
The injections imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Withdrawal of this medication means hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."
A Chronic Issue?
Medical guidelines suggest the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts say that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment might need to be long-term.
This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "underscore the persistent nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Accounts
Users who have stopped the medication report a intense resurgence of hunger.
"It was like something activating and I was suddenly starving," described a patient.
This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Growing Use
Survey data indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.
- Use is greater among women than males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and long-term success likely depends on combined lifestyle management.
