RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a joint strike against an underground arms cache in Syria employed by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, identified by reconnaissance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was situated in mountains just north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a several access tunnels providing entry to the depot... early reports are that the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the attack late on Saturday and every plane involved returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - referred to as ISIS - enforced extremist governance over parts of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action demonstrates our UK leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with our partners, to stamp out any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary remarked.

RAF aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syria to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of IS after its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank the personnel of our armed forces participating in this mission for their expertise and their courage," Healey said. "They were part of thousands of British troops stationed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to remove dangerous terrorists who endanger our safety, highlights how our armed forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure within its borders and powerful internationally."

Last December, the American forces executed what it termed a "large-scale strike" on Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports IS still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Syria and Iraq.
