Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for an extended period when dozens of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend floated over the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why criminals use a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that this activity become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
Regional Security Context
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
