Super Typhoon Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Large-Scale Evacuations Reported

The Philippines was severely impacted by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, resulting in a minimum of two fatalities and forced the evacuation of over a million residents.

Authorities reported that the massive storm caused widespread sudden floods, storm surges, landslides, and fierce gale-force winds, leading to the evacuation of 1.4 million residents across the country.

Extensive Destruction and Emergency Operations

In the town of Pandan, one of the worst-hit regions, disaster response teams recorded rising waters climbing to rooftop levels and homes washed out by strong flows.

Our team saved fourteen people who were trapped atop a house engulfed in flood in a low-lying neighbourhood,” an emergency official stated. One resident frantically contacted us, saying the roof of his house was about to be ripped off by the wind. We rescued him along with four family members.”

As of Monday morning, authorities announced at least two deaths: a drowning victim on the island and a second individual who died when her house collapsed in eastern Samar.

Storm Intensity and Forecast

The intense storm was downgraded to a typhoon early Monday as it crossed the Philippines’ largest island, where the capital is located.

Per meteorological authorities, the storm’s sustained wind speed dropped from 115 mph to 102 mph, though wind bursts were still reaching more than 275 km/h.

The cyclone is expected to lose strength as it moves in the direction of Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The national disaster response service indicated efforts were ongoing to assess damage to infrastructure and homes.

Roughly 6,000 evacuation centres were activated to accommodate 92,000 families.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

The typhoon hit just days after Typhoon Kalmaegi, that claimed at least 224 people and left another 135 missing prior to advancing toward Vietnam, where it killed five.

Searches for those still missing were halted recently due to safety concerns to emergency personnel.

Global warming is causing cyclones more intense and frequent. This typhoon marks the 21st typhoon to hit the Philippines this year.

Scientists have found that the frequency of intense cyclones striking the islands has increased by more than 100% in the past twenty years.

International estimates indicate that severe weather events cause an average of US$3.5 million in losses to the country annually.

The nation’s leader declared an emergency declaration last week because of the severe damage caused by the prior typhoon and the expected damage from Fung-wong.
