Wimbledon Embraces Video Review Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in employing video review systems.

Replay technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Athletes are granted the right to contest particular calls made by the official, echoing the system currently in operation at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

The new system will be operational on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This development follows just a season following the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to review specific situations, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Possible interference end of a point.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the number of challenges a competitor can request.

Practical Application

An illustrative example occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a tough call for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire watched a video and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews implemented at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where fans have occasionally been unsure if a ball was out or in.

Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have also announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
